UP Cebu’s Materials Innovation Center (MATIX) will hold a hands-on rattan weaving workshop featuring artisans Lyndon Basera and Merceditha Saraña on September 23, 2026.
Based in Barangay Basak, Cebu City, Basera and Saraña are described as “products of several generations of weavers, with their practice rooted in knowledge passed down through their family’s long tradition of craft.”
The two now manage a family-run workshop producing handcrafted pieces that carry forward their community’s weaving heritage.
The three-dimensional, hands-on workshop will introduce participants to traditional weaving techniques through the bending, shaping, and weaving of natural rattan into tactile forms and sculptural objects.
Participants will also learn basic methods for working with rattan, including techniques for shaping, joining, and weaving the material to create their own functional or decorative pieces.
The workshop fee is ₱500, inclusive of materials, while UP students may register for ₱350.
