NBSC Visits UP Cebu CCAD for Benchmarking Activity

The Northern Bukidnon State College visited the University of the Philippines Cebu with the Vice-President for Academic Affairs and the Dean of their College of Education today, November 16.

As a newly established State College, they aim to learn from our best practices as a leading university in the country and to explore the possibility of collaborating with our institution in the areas under curriculum and faculty development programs for their newly approved program offerings on Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts and Design.

Who’s Afraid of I̶d̶e̶o̶l̶o̶g̶y̶ Tradition?

The father of deconstruction, Jacques Derrida, has once said that the language we use today is still indebted to the theological heritage of the Western tradition. This, of course, is a rephrasing of Derrida – albeit one that is unwittingly misread by many commentators. Contrary to popular readings of Derrida, deconstruction is an offshoot of the philosopher’s realization that we cannot simply throw metaphysics out of the window. Deconstruction is not a critique (a la Immanuel Kant’s). It is not a discursive strategy which denies meaning to a work but, rather, it is a tactic (a la Michel de Certeau’s) which uncovers innocent ostracisms in the use of language. To further qualify: deconstruction is a tactic that is devoid of emancipatory expectation. Deconstruction exhumes dead and marginalized utilities in language-use. It is, therefore, not a threat to tradition. Rather, deconstruction is a thing of beauty and, as such, it helps us realize that traditions are indeed alive in that they permeate our everyday contemporary lives. Deconstruction is consumption, so to say, not production. Philosophy is housekeeping, hence Derrida says. We perform the mundane task of housekeeping, a.k.a. Philosophy, today only to repeat the same task in the succeeding days. In other words, we are fallible and our theologies will always be part of the default features of our everyday lives whether we like it or not. Ivy Marie Apa’s oeuvre offers us a glimpse of this realization.

Ivy takes the cue of Roland Barthes’ Mythologies and rereads it as a work about tradition instead of ideology. Her work is a dialogue with Greco-Judeo-Christian tradition as it is iterated, or survived, rather, by the capitalist system and its critical interlocutors. This dialogue is not an indictment of the West’s follies and limitations, as in Friedrich Nietzsche’s work. Ivy’s rereading of Mythologies, rather, is an exhortation for trans-valuation, as in Nietzsche’s work.

Communication Faculty Shared Her Expertise on Combatting Disinformation

Assistant Professor Mia Embalzado-Mateo of the Communication Program shared her expertise on combatting disinformation at the Gugma ug Kamatuoran Forum – Communication for Positive Change: The Fight Against Disinformation earlier today at the Seminario Mayor de San Carlos Social Hall.

CCAD Holds Its First In-Person Convocation of Scholars After Two Years

Honorific scholars of the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu College of Communication, Art, and Design (CCAD) were recognized in the college’s first-ever Convocation of Scholars after the pandemic.

The following is the breakdown of the number of students recognized in each program:

* Certificate of Fine Arts – Product Design: 15

* Certificate of Fine Arts – Studio Arts: 22

* Bachelor of Fine Arts – Product Design: 40

* Bachelor of Fine Arts – Studio Arts: 37

* Bachelor of Arts in Communication: 147

* Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication: 1

Prof. Jay Nathan Jore, the curator of the Jose Joya Gallery, also recognized the winners of the 46th Jose Joya National Artist Award and Exhibition held last October 12.

Prof. J. Karl P. Roque, OIC of CCAD, opened the program and, in his speech, elucidated the substantiality of hard work and determination toward attaining high grades. He also urges every student present at the ceremony to continue what they have started.

“As they say, attaining high grades in UP is relatively easy; the challenge, however, is maintaining them. That is, therefore, the challenge I posed to everyone here, that you continue to do this until you finish the race,” he said.

Mr. Adeste Deguilmo, an alumnus of the University of the Philippines Cebu and a prolific artist who had bagged several awards locally and internationally, was tasked to give an inspirational message to the honorific scholars.

In his message, he asserted that one should have high regard for his bailiwick.

A brief intermission also showcased the talents of two CCAD Talent Group students. The two sang “This Is Me” from the movie The “Greatest Showman.”

Subsequently, Dr. Belinda F. Espiritu, the College Secretary of CCAD, was called on stage to deliver the closing remarks.

The UP community sang the UP Naming Mahal to close the event officially.

CCAD Releases Schedule of Convocation of Scholars 2022

The College of Communication, Art, and Design is proud to announce the schedule of its convocation of scholars tomorrow, November 9th, at the Performing Arts Hall and online.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m, and it will feature keynote speaker Mr. Adeste Deguilmo.

He took up painting studies at the University of the Philippines Cebu and became a student of Cebu’s foremost painter, Martino Abellana.

After obtaining his diploma in 1986, he was involved in Advertising Agency for six years as a visualizer. In 1993 he helped organize the art group Cebu Artists Inc. and later became the group’s president.

He entered the teaching profession in 1999 and was a member of the Fine Arts Faculty of the University of San Carlos until 2006. In 2000 he received a residency grant from the Federal Chancellery of the republic of Austria and stayed in Vienna, Austria for three months as a foreign artist in Residence. with the support of the Cebu Arts Council. As an output of his residency, he exhibited his works at the Kunstlerhaus in Vienna coupled with a homecoming exhibit in Cebu at the CAP Art Center

He also bagged two important awards in 1997 alone. First, he won the Gand Prize of the Letras y Figures, a national competition organized by Instituto de Cervantes in Manila. Second, he garnered the grand prize of the Land Bank of the Philippines Centennial mural painting contest.

In his prolific career as a professional artist, our distinguished guest speaker has mounted more than ten solo exhibitions and

numerous group shows. In 2010, he was awarded the 3rd prize for his work titled ”Flowers and Gardens” in the April-May issue of the International Artist Magazine. He was again featured in a major article in the same international art magazine in the August issue of 2018.

In addition, he won the Grand Prize in the Figurative Abstraction category organized by Kaalyado ng Sining, a National Painting Competition in 2012.

Furthermore, he was featured in a solo exhibition by Qube Gallery at the prestigious Art Central Hong Kong in March 2017.

Author of National Book Award Finalist REMAINS gave this year’s first lecture for UP Cebu Creative Writing Program Pundok Katitikan Lecture Series

For their first in-person event this year, Pundok Katitikan Lecture Series invited Daryll Delgado, an award-winning author, and professor, to discuss three crucial questions in the post-truth era last October 14, 2022.

Some of the questions that one must ponder include:

What happens when the distinctions between truth, fiction, and lies collapse?

Why do people coalesce more easily around certain fictions than around inconvenient truths?

How important is the moral imagination in helping us navigate current realities and threats of an erased history?

She also mentioned that her form of writing is her own way of resistance. Additionally, she also highlighted the importance of cultivating the relationships between publishers, writers, and readers, as this connection can save us.

The lecture series was formally opened by College of Communication, Art, and Design Faculty Marie Rose Arong’s statement.

“Public Humanities is not just about sharing knowledge with the general public. It is also about learning from them. So, I hope today’s lecture continues to foster the knowledge exchange that we imagined when we originally started this in 2018,” said Arong.

This was followed by a spoken word poetry performance by former Tug-Ani EIC and former VP of Tinta, Alvin Dave. The spoken poetry was entitled Sa Payah Sila Nagpahinga, a tribute to the farmers in Sagay City who were massacred last October 2018.

The lecture was attended by UP Cebu and CNU students.

Local Cebuano Artist, Bastinuod, was also there for a pop-up booth of postcards.

The event included a brief question and answer portion, a photo opportunity, and snacks.

An annual UP Cebu Creative Writing event since 2018, Pundok Katitikan provides spaces for Filipino writers to share. The second and last lecture for Pundok Katitikan will be on November 11, 2022.

UP Cebu Participates in Gabii Sa Kabilin 2022

The University of the Philippines Cebu commenced the UP Cebu Museum of Art and Culture’s soft opening as they exhibited different collections of artworks and cultural performances from various artists as part of the activities for this year’s Gabii sa Kabilin (GSK) last night.

The kickoff of the exhibit was initiated through the ribbon cutting ceremony at the end of the program that was led by UP Cebu Chancellor Atty. Leo Malagar, Vice Chancellor for Administration Dr. Hazel Trapero, Office of the Student Affairs Director Alena Macasil, and Jose T. Joya Art Gallery curator Jay Jore.

As part of the cultural performances, UP Cebu’s SayawE and Iskultura Dance Ensemble opened the presentations as they showcased their collaboration on their “Kahayag” dance production. A Balak performance was also staged by Jae Magdadaro and Ton Daposala.

Iskultura also performed again with their own dance rendition to the Sinulog dance and a song production was carried out by Daisy Rosos. SayawE also presented a hip hop dance performance. The set of cultural performances concluded as Icy Lumactud sang the popular Bisaya Song “Usahay.”

After the series of performances, the exhibit held inside UP Cebu’s Administration Building was then opened for the spectators and participants of GSK. Several artworks from different artists were hung on the walls of the stairway and corridor of the second floor of the building.

UP Cebu was one of the 20 participating heritage sites and museums in the annual cultural event hosted by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. Culture and Heritage Unit along with its partner museums, cultural organizations, and local government units after a two-year hiatus brought by the pandemic.

The university is presenting three exhibits:

Katahum: Musings on Cebuano Arts, which is the soft opening of the UP Cebu Museum of Art and Culture at the Administration Building;
Pamantasang Halangdon: The School that Refuses to Die, which features the history of the university and a tribute to Prof. Madrilena De La Cerna at the covered walk, curated by Jay Nathan T. Jore and Greys Lockheart; and
The 46th Jose Joya Awards Exhibition, which features the artworks of the Fine Arts students of UP Cebu at the Jose T. Joya Art Gallery.

Aside from these, UP Cebu has also prepared some activities like cultural performances and film showing for the visitors.

UP Cebu Fine Arts Alumnus Launches Solo Exhibit

UP Cebu BFA in Industrial Design (2018) alum and UP High School lecturer Kenneth Gallardo opens his solo exhibit titled Eastern Celestials today at Neil Felipp Boutique, Cebu City.

“Kenneth Gallardo finds inspiration through life’s unexpected moments through experimentation of the humble coffee stain. As he explored through this medium, he fused watercolor and gold detail levating his work into something more than just the ordinary. One such detail can be seen through the paper planes as a symbol of dreams taking flight with every piece that he creates.

As his dreams take flight. he looks into the heavens and is reminded by the Chinese Zodiac of which he reimagined through this playful array of coffee, watercolour, and gold embellishments.”
