The site for the CCAD Biospace at the UP Cebu Sunset Garden
The College of Communication, Art and Design (CCAD) will launch its Permaculture Garden today, August 26, at the University of the Philippines Cebu’s Sunset Garden, marking the first step toward establishing the CCAD Community Biospace.
This Biospace is an interdisciplinary space for art, science, learning, and community engagement.
The launch began with soil conditioning led by permaculturist, artist, and environmentalist Lee Hizola, who also delivered a talk, “Intro to Permaculture: Ways of Knowing and Interconnectedness”.
It introduced participants to the principles of permaculture and the interconnected relationships between people, environments, and systems.
CCAD Dean Dr. Crina E. Tañongon said she hopes to transform available campus spaces into living learning and research environments.
“The gardens are anchored in the Restore–Restory framework, which connects ecological restoration with the recovery and circulation of collective memory, local knowledge, and everyday narratives surrounding food, land, and survival,” said Tañongon.
Through the Permaculture Garden, students, faculty, staff, and community partners will have opportunities to plant, cultivate, harvest, share food narratives, and explore sustainable approaches to food security and climate adaptation.
The garden will also serve as a space for action research, creative practice, exhibitions, storytelling, and futures thinking, allowing participants to engage with ecological and social concerns through hands-on and collaborative activities.
The initiative forms part of the CCAD Community Biospace, which brings together community engagement, knowledge production, creative work, and ecological practice. It reflects CCAD’s vision of becoming a leading institution for transdisciplinary knowledge creation and community engagement in art and design, communication, media, and cultural studies in Central Visayas.
