The College of Communication, Art and Design (CCAD) will begin cultivating its Permaculture Garden through a series of weekly activities.
Located at the Sunset Garden of the University of the Philippines Cebu, the garden will be cared for not only by the college’s faculty but also by students and other members of the UP Cebu community.
The garden was formally launched on August 26 with faculty members, biology students, and university officials in attendance.
Permaculturist Lee Hizola will guide the college as it develops the garden.
“Permaculture is a design system,” Hizola said during her talk, which introduced strategies and principles for gardening.
Hizola also introduced the concepts of caring for nature, caring for people, and fair share.
In the coming weeks, the lectures will focus on composting, seed care, and maximizing sunlight for the garden.
“It is really time to restore, revive our connection with nature,” said CCAD Dean Crina Tañongon.
The Permaculture Garden is part of the planned CCAD Community Biospace, which brings together community engagement, knowledge production, creative work, and ecological practice.
It is also part of the college’s vision of becoming a leading institution for transdisciplinary knowledge creation and community engagement in art and design, communication, media, and cultural studies in Central Visayas.
