The College of Communication, Art and Design (CCAD) of the University of the Philippines Cebu is exploring a potential collaboration with Teatro de San Pedro Calungsod (TSPC) to bring Cebuano theater productions to the university.

The initiative follows an exploratory meeting between representatives of TSPC and CCAD, including Monsignor Martin Ancajas of the Archdiocese of Cebu. Also present were thespians Julieza Chua and Cornell Tudio.

During the meeting, both parties discussed the possibility of staging a theatrical production at UP Cebu at no cost to the audience.

“This is very good for our pedagogy, especially in teaching our general education courses,” said CCAD Dean Crina Tañongon.

Founded by Msgr. Agustin Velez Ancajas, TSPC uses theater as a medium for storytelling, presenting narratives that explore faith, human relationships, personal struggles, and the values that shape communities.

Through its productions, the theater company brings stories closer to audiences while highlighting the expressive potential of Cebuano-language performance.

For CCAD, the proposed collaboration reflects its commitment to advancing the performing arts as a platform for creative expression, cultural engagement, and critical thinking.

The plays will be a requirement for students taking any of the following GE courses: Theater11, Arts1 and Wika 1.

“We want UP students to have the full experience of Cebuano theater,” said Msgr. Ancajas, a playwright and director.

The proposed collaboration could also open opportunities for students to engage with theater practitioners and explore the creative processes.

Future activities would include discussions on live performance, writing, directing, acting, and production design.

Through this initiative, CCAD and TSPC hope to bring theater closer to the university community, creating opportunities for reflection, dialogue, and learning through the performing arts.
