The Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) of the University of the Philippines Cebu’s College of Communication, Art, and Design is kicking off its 10th anniversary by bringing together fabrication laboratories across the Visayas.

Called “Fabconnect,” it is a two-day gathering on collaboration, design, and innovation. The initiative seeks to “reconnect, share experiences, exchange ideas, and strengthen the country’s maker network.”

Held on October 15 and 16, the program features FabLab island reports, design workshops, a manufacturing immersion visit, and conversations on the future of making and design.

The program describes the event as an avenue to “share projects, exchange ideas, and visit Cebu’s manufacturing industry,” while exploring how design can grow through collaboration and real-world practice.

The event also features FABSIKLABAN, a design innovation initiative inspired by the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Design and Innovation Pitch Competition.

Participants will design and prototype solutions addressing any of the 10 national innovation priority areas in collaboration with local creative partners.

As part of the initiative, the FABSIKLABAN Design Innovation Workshop brings teams together with their assigned mentoring studios to refine their design proposals based on each studio’s thematic focus and the mentors’ initial feedback.

On October 16, the FABSIKLABAN Design Futures Workshop will introduce teams to a working design framework that helps them situate their proposals within a broader social context.

This approach aims to ensure that the final designs respond not only to immediate needs but also to the larger systems and conditions
surrounding the problems they seek to address.

Established in September 2016, FabLab UP Cebu was Cebu’s first fabrication laboratory and the second in the Visayas.

It was established alongside a Negosyo Center through a partnership with the DTI Region 7.
